Burlington
Vermont
The Airbase, home of the 158th Fighter Squadron âThe Green Mountain Boys' of the Vermont Air National Guard, shared with Burlington Regional airport, was quiet. After an identity check from a pair of young Air Policemen Luke parked the Blazer far away from where any superior officers might want to park their staff cars or the fly boys and girls were likely to park their predictable sports cars. Unlike when he was on active duty, Luke kept little of his duty gear with him. His go bag now was restricted to two pair of Crye Precision uniforms, two pair of socks stuffed into two pair of rugged La Sportiva Makalu mountaineering boots which he had fallen in love with a decade earlier alongside many of the worlds mountaineering community, and a pair of PJ knives made in Arizona. All other implements necessary for his job were held in a cage that mimicked a jailhouse holding cell with its walls of open chain link fence and solid steel bench where he had stuffed footlockers and handmade cabinets that complimented those of the other Controllers in his squadron. He confirmed that he was the only one in the team space and tossed his gear into his cage before finding a wardroom with a coffee machine and went back over the notes in his little notebook while it brewed. With coffee in hand, he strolled down the hall of the 1950âs era building and down into set of below ground floors that had once served as fallout shelters for a potential nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia. There was a rumor that a mini NORAD had at one time existed in Burlington. These days the Air Guard used the first sub-basement as an armory while the other was reserved for the emergency power plant. It was in the armory that Webb began his first truly illegal shopping spree. Mixing things that he wanted with things he needed for whatever field exercise his boss had in store for him he made his trip fast. As a Captain he knew that very few people would question him. There was no joy in robbing from this place that had long been his home. It was painful to be abusing this. He took some solace in knowing that if all went well, he could easily sneak it all back in when he was done. If it did not go well, what would it really matter? Bearing all of that in mind he left the armory looking no more loaded down than he would on any other operation. What was unseen were a second pair of PRC-152 Radios, another pair of Tactical Satellite Radios, two pair of Panoramic Night Vision goggles and the lower receivers
